Trump is Setting Up an Impeachment Trap for House Democrats
Nothing illustrates the absurd nature of impeachment politics than the events that took place on the morning of May 22nd.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi conducted a closed-door meeting with the Democratic caucus, who are increasingly demanding that President Donald Trump be impeached.
She apparently beat back that demand with promises that impeachment proceedings might commence once various investigations that the House is conducting turns something up that might resemble a high crime or a misdemeanor,
Then, Pelosi suggested that President Trump is engaged in a coverup, noting his refusal to allow current and former officials to answer the blizzard of subpoenas coming from Jerry Nadler’s House Justiciary Committee.
Trump’s position is that these potential witnesses are covered by executive privilege and that, besides, Nadler is just engaging in a fishing expedition and seeking an opportunity to grand stand.
The Mueller Report proved that Trump did not conspire with the Russians to steal the 2016 election and Attorney General Barr concluded that he did not engage in obstruction of justice.
Having accused the president of the United States of being a criminal, Pelosi journeyed to the White House with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to discuss how best to spend $2 trillion on infrastructure.
However, instead of having a pleasant hour or so plotting how best to waste the taxpayer’s money, Pelosi and Schumer found a president in a state of towering rage.
Clearly, he suggested that the two Democratic leaders are not interested in working to actually accomplish things.
The meeting would therefore be deferred until all of the investigations are finished.
Then, without further ado, POTUS stalked out of the room.
The looks on Pelosi’s and Schumer’s faces must have been priceless.
Pelosi must especially be appalled because she knew, because if she knows anything she knows politics, that she and her fellow House Democrats had run right into the impeachment trap that Trump has been setting for them.
Some Democrats, like Rep Maxine “Mad Max” Walters, D-California, have been hollering for Trump’s impeachment since he was sworn into office.
His high crime was beating Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.
Then came the Russian conspiracy theory, investigated at length by former FBI Director Robert Mueller.
However, Muller found nothing and, worse, Attorney General Bob Barr is investigating the people who concocted the Russian collusion conspiracy theory to begin with.
There was nothing for it to continue with investigations or, as a growing number of House Democrats, no doubt in the grip of Watergate nostalgia, want, proceed with impeachment anyway.
Still affecting a mien of anger, Trump addressed the media in the Rose Garden, claiming, with some justification, that Pelosi had blown everything up.
Then, Trump withdrew to the White House and, no doubt, poured himself a glass of diet coke to celebrate.
He has Nancy Pelosi right where he wants her.
Pelosi’s nightmare is about to come true. Trump will base the 2020 campaign on attacking a “do nothing congress,” to use a phrase coined by Harry Truman.
The majority of the American people do not want impeachment and would prefer that the two parties settle their differences and get things done.
Immigration, health care, and infrastructure are all being neglected while House Democrats play games.
The applauds lines at Trump’s MAGA rallies practically write themselves.
Elections have consequences, and 2018, when the Democrats retook the House, is no exception.
A lot of pretend moderate Democrats were elected on the strength of women voters who were angry with Trump’s behavior.
Now they got partisan gridlock that will waste two years when nothing will get done,
President Trump rammed home his message in one of his epic tweet storms.
“So sad that Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer will never be able to see or understand the great promise of our Country. They can continue the Witch Hunt which has already cost $40M and been a tremendous waste of time and energy for everyone in America, or get back to work….”
“…But they really want a do-over! You can’t investigate and legislate simultaneously – it just doesn’t work that way. You can’t go down two tracks at the same time. Let Chuck, Nancy, Jerry, Adam and all of the rest finish playing their games….”
“….Democrat leadership is tearing the United States apart, but I will continue to set records for the American People – and Nancy, thank you so much for your prayers, I know you truly mean it!”
