That Time Nancy Pelosi was Ordered to be Quiet While Condemning Trump
In her eagerness to pass a resolution to condemn President Trump for allegedly “racist” tweets, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi violated House rules.
Madam Speaker was at the podium giving her reasons that President Donald Trump be rebuked by the House for a series of tweets attacking four radical House members, collectively known as “the Squad.” According to Fox News, Pelosi, in a speech that was like that of a schoolmarm rebuking an erring student, concluded by saying:
“There’s no excuse for any response to those words but a swift and strong unified condemnation. Every single member of this institution, Democratic and Republican, should join us in condemning the president’s racist tweets. To do anything less would be a shocking rejection of our values, and shameful abdication of our oath of office to protect the American people. I urge a unanimous vote, and yield back the balance of my time.”
Immediately, Rep Doug Collins, R- Georgia leaped to his feet and asked whether Madam Speaker would like to rephrase her remarks. He was referring to the claim that the president’s tweets were “racist.”
Pelosi claimed that her speech had been approved by the House Parliamentarian, doubtless a lie as subsequent events were to prove.
Collins then said, “Can I ask the words be taken down? I make a point of order that the gentlewoman’s words are unparliamentary and be taken down.”
It will probably be forever unknown when Pelosi realized her blunder, whether it was when Collins made his suggestion or later, as the meeting took place at the Podium with the Parliamentarian and several House members. Pelosi fled the floor, itself a violation of House rules when a member’s words are taken down. She was also not allowed to speak until the end of the day.
At one point Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo, who has assumed the podium when Pelosi finished her remarks, simply stated, “I abandon the chair” and fled the House chamber. He was frustrated that Pelosi was not going to be exonerated for her breach of the House rules.
Indeed, House Majority Steny Hoyer announced that Pelosi had indeed violated House rules by stating that President Trump’s tweets were “racist.”
The farce continued as the House on party lines voted not to strike Pelosi’s remarks from the record. Then, finally, it voted largely on party lines to condemn Trump for the tweets that were not, by the ruling of the Chair, racist, at least enough to mention it on the floor.
Pelosi and House Democrats thought they had President Trump and House Republicans in a trap. The tweets in which the president attacked the radical House members, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley, have been widely condemned as “racist” by Democrats and their enablers in the media.
However, since Pelosi had become too enraptured with herself to realize that she was violating House rules, the narrative was not that the president had been rebuked for being a “racist.” Rather, the story was about the gang who couldn’t shoot straight.
The other narrative that is arising from the proceedings is that Nancy Pelosi is no longer in control of the House. House Democrats are now dancing to the tune being played by the Squad. The narrative threatens to be devastating to the prospects of Democrats holding their majority in the 2020 elections.
In the meantime, Trump has been unrelenting in his attacks on the four radical House members. Despite their protestations to the contrary, the Four House Members of the Apocalypse, as they have also been called, have made numerous, anti-American, racist, and anti-Semitic statements. Omar, for example, once suggested that supporters of Israel were only on the side of the Jewish state because they had been paid to do so.
Also, by calling the president of the United States a racist, Democrats are implying that tens of millions of his supporters are also racist. Indeed, some in the media are stating that supposition outright. Trump supporters are not likely to take that accusation in good grace.
The president knows this, He is counting on it. That many Democrats seem to have no clue is remarkable, to put the matter mildly.
