The Good Old Days: 35 Stores Closing for Thanksgiving

With the rush of the holidays fast approaching, many are looking forward to the infamous Black Friday deals to be found in most major retailers. And yet, it’s something the employees of those stores have dreaded since that day last year. Well, in response to this dread and the backlash it warrants from the families of said employees, quite a few major retailers have decided to make a change this year.

Instead of opening their doors on Thanksgiving Day, as has become the norm, 35 household name stores have decided to stay closed, allowing their employees both time with families and less stress and headaches.

While this most certainly won’t solve all the problems retail employees see at work during this time of year, it’s a start in the right direction.

As WFLA-TV reported on Thursday, “Thanksgiving is still a few weeks away, and while many stores will have big sales that start on the holiday, some retailers have decided to close their doors this year.”

The New York Times noted that “After spending several years rushing to open their doors on Thanksgiving Day, retailers have been hit with a dose of reality: It may not be worth it.”

And they continued, explaining, “Office Depot, Mall of America and the electronics store HHGregg have all announced they will be closed on Thanksgiving. Other retailers like Sears will open fewer stores, and of the locations that do open, many will have shorter hours.”

As for why the NYT explains that the reasons may be slightly different for each store but basically boil down to the fact that employees and their families do not like having to work on the holiday, and it simply causes too much stress for everyone involved.

“The companies give different reasons for the shift – employees should be able to spend time with family for one – but the overriding message is clear: For some retailers, opening on Thanksgiving is too much of a headache.”

They further explained that prior to 2016, sales had been declining. Thus the “headache” these retailors received simply wasn’t worth the effort and the blowback.

According to WFLA, the following stores are expected to be closed on Thanksgiving Day this year:

  • American Girl
  • AT&T
  • Babies “R” Us
  • Barnes & Noble
  • Bed Bath & Beyond
  • Burlington
  • Cabela’s
  • Costco
  • Crate and Barrel
  • DSW
  • GameStop
  • Guitar Center
  • HHGregg
  • H&M
  • Hobby Lobby
  • Home Depot
  • HomeGoods
  • IKEA
  • Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Stores
  • Jos. A. Bank
  • Lowe’s
  • Marshalls
  • Mattress Firm
  • Menards
  • Neiman Marcus
  • Nordstrom
  • Nordstrom Rack
  • Office Depot and OfficeMax
  • Patagonia
  • Petco
  • PetSmart
  • Pier 1 Imports
  • Sam’s Club
  • Staples
  • T.J. Maxx

The trend of opening on Thanksgiving has slowly been reversing since 2016. Therefore, you may notice that many of these stores were not open on the holiday in the last couple of years either.

BestBlackFriday.com reports, “So far, there have no major changes in the stores remaining closed compared to the past year or two. Some stores have changed, of course, however, over the past several years.”

For example, “Stein Mart…is closed this year (and remained closed in 2017 and 2018 as well), but opened during the evening of Thanksgiving for a few years prior to that.”

However, not all stores find themselves in this situation.

The New York Times says that “Opening on Thanksgiving makes sense for these and other retailers that rely heavily on promotions. Stores like Walmart ad Target, which will both open this year, still offer the kinds of door-buster sales on televisions and electronics that rally customers to line up early, even in the cold.”

The simple fact is that nobody needs to work on Turkey Day. Capitalism is great for our nation and has created an economy that is strong and capable of providing for all of America. But when it drives people to have to choose between their families and their livelihood, it becomes a severe problem.

And let’s face it, making someone work from 6 pm to 6 am only to come back a few hours later and deal with crazy crowds on Thanksgiving Day really isn’t worth you standing in line for hours just to get that new flat-screen TV.

To the companies that have decided to stand up for their employees and give them a little time off to enjoy their lives, America thanks you. Here’s to hoping many more will see the benefits of your business decisions.
