Bernie Sanders, a Jewish Candidate, takes an Anti-Israel Policy Position
Sen Bernie Sanders, I-VT, is a walking, talking contradiction. He has professed many times that he is proud of his Jewish heritage. He has also been one of the most vehement enemies of the State of Israel, so much so that he has threatened to withhold military aid to the Jewish state unless it caves into demands by its Palestinian enemies. Sanders’ stance contrasts with the pro-Israel policy being conducted by President Trump.
Fox News suggests that Sanders is being hurt among Jewish Democrats in the polls because of his anti-Israel policy position.
“According to a Morning Consult poll released in May, only 11 percent of Jewish Democrats supported Sanders. One reason for this low level of Jewish support is Sanders’ record of strongly opposing many Israeli actions and policies, along with his threats to reduce vital U.S. aid to Israel.
“This is combined with Sanders’ failure to take a strong stand opposing the global rise of anti-Semitism, along with his warm embrace of anti-Semites and forces hostile to Israel here at home.”
Sanders has opposed the Trump administration’s acknowledgment of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the moving of the American embassy to that city. He has criticized Israel’s policy toward Gaza, a terror state ruled by Hamas from where rocket and terror attacks are regularly launched against the Jewish state. Recently, Sanders, along with most of the rest of the Democratic candidates, criticized the decision by the Trump administration to no longer regard Jewish settlements on the West Bank as being contrary to international law.
The National Review, by the way, published a defense of Trump’s decision regarding West Bank settlements.
“And yesterday Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the United States would no longer take the position that Israeli civilian ‘settlements’ in the West Bank are ‘inconsistent with international law.’ (Or, as our German ambassador Richard Grenell aptly put it, the United States would ’no longer meddle in local Israeli zoning and building-permits issues.’) Many of those ‘settlements’ — cities, really, some of them in existence for decades — are part of a de facto border, and they are never going to be bulldozed. That’s also reality.”
Thus, with a stroke of a pen, Israeli settlers are no longer “occupiers” but rather residents of their ancestral homeland. The Palestinians have just paid a price for decades of intransigence and hostility toward Israel. Now they have to accept the new reality as the basis of a realistic peace.
Bernie, naturally, was having none of it. “Israeli settlements in the occupied territory are illegal,” said Sanders. “This is clear from international law and multiple United Nations resolutions. Once again, Mr. Trump is isolating the United States and undermining diplomacy by pandering to his extremist base.”
Bernie is also quite silent where it comes to the virulent anti-Semitism expressed not only by Palestinians in the Middle East but also among some of his supporters. He seems to give groups like Hamas and Fatah a pass where it comes to hostility toward the State of Israel and their desire to see that state wiped off the map. In effect, he blames Israel for the Palestinian attacks against it, in the view of the authors of the Fox News piece.
Bernie also likes to pretend that anti-Semitism is an exclusive product of white nationalists, ignoring the phenomenon when it comes from Middle Eastern sources. He is certainly blind to Jew-hatred from some of his supporters.
“Sanders has also been endorsed by anti-Semitic Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich. Sanders has defended both Muslim congresswomen and now is campaigning hard to win the support of American Muslims for his presidential bid, including those who have expressed hostility to Israel.”
Tlaib and Omar have both promulgated anti-Semitic tropes, accusing Jewish Americans of dual loyalty and suggesting that American supporters of Israel are being bought off by wealthy Jews, who form a secret conspiracy that controls world governments.
Ironically, Donald Trump, who has been accused of racism and of stirring up racial hatred, has become the warmest friend of Israel and the foe of anti-Semitism wherever it occurs. No one has suggested that Bernie is himself anti-Semitic, though he is demonstrably tolerant of that ancient hatred. “Despite his own Jewish heritage and the terrible deaths of members of his own family who were among the 6 million who perished in the Holocaust, Sen. Sanders has shown us he is not ready to lead America in the fight against anti-Semitism today.”
