What?! Biden Says It’s Okay to Hit Women

It is bizarre to me that former Vice President Joe Biden is somehow still in this race. Sure, he has past experience in the White House and has been in politics most of his life. However, at some point, we have to question his mind, especially in light of some of the downright awful gaffes he has made during his campaign.

And his Wednesday night performance in the most recent Democratic primary debate proves this more than ever.

He actually said on Wednesday that men have a right to “raise a hand” to women and that they should “keep punching at it.”

I am really beyond words here. I mean, how does this even happen?

Biden and his campaign are no strangers to blunders, and even more serious ones like this. And while it has caused several to question his abilities, it also becomes somewhat of an endearing quality about the man. His mistakes prove that isn’t perfect, nor exceptionally eloquent. And for some, that makes him more relatable.

However, we doubt this latest statement by him is going to appeal to the public very well.

Biden said, “No man has a right to raise a hand to a woman in anger other than in self-defense and that rarely ever occurs.”

And if his endorsement of hitting a woman wasn’t enough, he continued by saying, “and so we have to just change the culture. Period. And keep punching at it and punching at it and punching at it.”

The implications of what he was saying were immediately heard by the crowd who let out a rather bad, fake laugh. He should have stopped there. But since he heard the laughter, he didn’t. Instead, he chose to add, “No, I really mean it. It’s a gigantic issue.”

As I said, he should have stopped. Using the phrase “punching at it” when talking about domestic violence and, in particular, violence against women, is bad enough. But then saying, “No, I really mean it,” just makes it so much worse.

And that wasn’t lost on those watching the debate.

Brigitte Gabriel commented on his performance by saying, “First, Joe Biden talks about how Men can only hit women in ‘Self defense.’ Then he proceeds to use the term “punching it, punching it, and punching it” in the very next sentence… That’s one heck of a front runner the Democratic Party has…”

And I doubt she was the only that took notice of this.

Just think about how big of an issue the #MeToo movement is right now. There is no doubt it will have some effect on the election.

And then we have to consider the sheer number of women candidates who are running against Joe. Do you think that just one of them might have been offended by that comment, if not all of them?

Now, in his defense, he did try and amend his mistake. He quickly added, “The fact is that what happens now is that we have to fundamentally change the culture, the culture of how women are treated.”

And he is correct. Maybe it should start with not insinuating that women can be hit at all or by not using violent language like “punching it” to refer to how we are to approach domestic violence change.

He was also correct when he said that education needs to change to incorporate equality for all children. But his statement of “poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids,” seems to signify that maybe that isn’t his goal.

Sure, he claims to take a stand against inequality issues like race and abuse against women, and that is admirable. But nearly every time he speaks, he says things like this. And it must cause us to hesitate and ask why his mind would even go in that direction. If he really believes in what we think he is trying to say, why do things like “white kids” and hitting a woman in self-defense come out?

Furthermore, does anyone actually think things will get better if he wins the nomination or even the presidency? Because it won’t. He’s been making mistakes like this for years, even under Obama. And if these gaffes are any indication, they are only getting worse. How can we trust him to make a good impression on foreign trade deals when he says things like this?

The fact is, we can’t. And a man you can’t trust shouldn’t be president.
