Bernie Madoff Is Dying and Begging Judge For Mercy
Bernie Madoff, the man who stole from his victims a total of $65 billion, is begging for a judge to release him from his sentence of 150 years behind bars. It is obvious to say life in jail. Like every heartless criminal who knew precisely what they were doing, where was the mercy for their victims?
Mercy comes to those who show mercy. Madoff’s mercy is within the Butner Federal penitentiary in North Carolina inside the prison’s comfort care unit. He is now 81-years-old and confined to a wheelchair and a back brace.
Doctors are giving him less than 18 months to live due to his illnesses. Madoff wants to die outside the prison walls and claims he will be gone by next year. Documents were filed Wednesday with the information released to the public stating he has terminal kidney failure.
On top of the kidney problems, the documents also show Madoff has hypertension, hyperparathyroidism, cardiovascular disease, and a bladder neck obstruction. Madoff added to the list when questioned on why he should be released Madoff said he has a bad case of acid reflux and he can’t sleep.
Everyone knows it is tough to be ill, and with the illnesses, any reasonable person would not wish another ill. But the fact is, “do the crime, do the time.” He should have thought everything through before robbing people blind through all of his evil schemes.
Some things in life go unpunished through the system, but when a person is caught, it is then, they want to cry about how sorry they are. We all do things a little off-key at times, but really, $65 billion?
So Madoff claims there were other cases where the prisoner was dying, and they got released from prison. The name of the Lockerbie, Scottish bomber Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi, came up as a precedent for his release. This fellow killed 270 people who were on board the Pan Am flight 103.
The claim is what the Scottish bomber did was nowhere near as bad as what Madoff did. He was released after only serving eight years of his sentence while suffering from terminal prostate cancer.
It is true, it was not as bad, and it is one of those incidents which slipped through the cracks of our justice system. Everyone should have to serve their sentence, and if their sentence is 150 years and they are of old-age, then they should have to serve their sentence. After all, this is not a misdemeanor. This was a federal offense and a felony.
There is a way to serve his sentence, which would grant mercy and is somewhat fair. Madoff could go under house arrest and live out his remaining days that way. But it was what he said in the documents that have everyone angry.
Madoff stated he has no more funds to live. If he were to be shown mercy and be released, he would stay with an anonymous friend to live out his final days. Here is the kicker. He would live off of his Medicare benefits and his Social Security benefits.
As taxpayers, we already fund the lifestyle of prisoners. To have the nerve to say that he would take more money from taxpayers after he ripped off billions of dollars from people and continue to do it upon being released! That is a special kind of ignorance which shows he is not sorry at all, and that is a slap in the face to his victims and to us taxpayers because we will be forking out his livelihood.
There has been no immediate response from the judge on a ruling, if or when it will be given. We can be sure the judge would probably make a note of that last comment.
It has been since 2009 since Bernie Madoff pled guilty for his evil investment frauds on 11 counts of federal felonies. If the judge does not agree with releasing Madoff, his sentence will end in 2139, over a century after he is dead and gone.
It wasn’t until 2017 when the investors started getting some of their money back. The Madoff Victim Fund was started by the Department of Justice.
$772.5 million was forfeited and handed to over 24,000 victims. Since then and still continuing, over $9 billion in assets will be paid back to more victims. Mercy was forced for the victims’ refunds by the courts, not by Madoff. Where should mercy come from?
