Biden Hosts Potential VP Pick
Barring a low probability event such as the candidate coming down with the coronavirus, former Vice President Joe Biden has all but wrapped up the Democratic nomination for president of the United States. To be sure Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont disagrees and still thinks he has a “narrow path” to grabbing the prize for himself. However, increasingly, no one cares what Bernie thinks.
In any case, CNN has reported that Biden has already informed Bernie that he is already started a search for a vice-presidential running mate. That person will certainly not be Bernie Sanders nor, as many want, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Biden has promised that his partner in campaigning will be a woman, taking a leaf from the book of John. McCain and Walter Mondale. It should be mentioned that neither Sarah Palin nor Geraldine Ferraro brought enough excitement to their respective tickets to win the day.
The question arises, which woman should be joined at the hip with Biden to help him have at President Trump. Business Insider is pretty sure that the woman should be Sen. Kamala Harris, D-California.
“Kamala Harris has strong appeal among both moderates and progressives, which has no doubt contributed to her polling as the top VP choice. Moreover, as the only black female presidential contender, she represents arguably the most influential voting bloc for the Democratic party. And with her proven track record and level-headedness, she makes a strong case to be a good president on day one – a consideration that will likely be a greater factor in the battle of the septuagenarians.”
Oddly, none of these fine qualities sufficed to propel Sen. Harris into the top spot of the Democratic ticket. Most Democratic voters were turned off by Harris’ abrasive personality and her history as a rough, tough prosecutor willing to send nonviolent drug offenders to long stretches in prison.
Biden seems to be looking elsewhere as well. The Hill is reporting that Biden hosted Gov. Gretchen Whitmire, D-Michigan on his brand new podcast. Biden said, “Gov. Whitmer is an outstanding governor. She is one of the most talented people in the country in my view. She also is a supporter. She was also a co-chair of my campaign. She’s a good friend, but she has been laser-focused, laser-focused on delivering for her state.”
Biden may or may not believe the words that came out of his mouth, but the Detroit News is pleased to disagree with the sentiment. Whitmire’s home state newspaper accused the governor of playing politics with the coronavirus pandemic, which is hitting Michigan particularly hard. She is engaged in a running feud with President Donald Trump, which has inhibited her ability t deal with the pandemic.
The feud started when Michigan state regulators warned doctors not to prescribe hydroxychloroquine, a drug that President Trump and a great many doctors have touted as a possible treatment for the coronavirus. Whitmire has also assumed the role of Democratic attack dog, according to the Detroit News editorial, which calls into question her ability to cooperate with the White House in suppressing the pandemic.
Things went from bad to worse when Trump called Whitmire “Gretchen Half Whitmire” and went on to say that she is “way in over her head” and that she “doesn’t have a clue.” Trump also called her “the woman from Michigan.” Whitmire responded by showing up on a late-night talk show wearing a T-shirt with “The Woman from Michigan” on it.
Whitmire and Trump have since made peace and are working together in the war on the coronavirus. She has backed off from a ban on prescribing hydroxychloroquine for some patients suffering from the disease.
Nevertheless, the Detroit News counseled Whitmire to follow the examples of Gov. Newsom of California and Cuomo of New York who has set aside partisanship for the greater cause of fighting the coronavirus.
Whitmire’s attractiveness for Biden is fairly obvious. She did not run for president against him and is an ally. She has shown that she is willing to mix it up with the president when the spirit moves her.
Of course, Team Biden cautions that the process of Veep selection is still in its early stages. Much likely depends on where the United States is by August who Biden’s running mate will be and even how she will be selected. Some are talking about a “virtual convention.” That means no rumbled on the floor, no demonstrations, and no fiery speeches to the faithful that have been a feature of American politics for over a century and a half.
