Mitt Romney Finds a New Way to Double Cross Fellow Republicans
Utah Senator and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney has gone above and beyond in his most recent departure from support for President Donald Trump. The Utah Republican came out against the investigation into Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, and his business dealings in Burisma, Ukraine.
According to Romney, the investigation was “not the legitimate role of government,” as he stated during a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee business meeting on Wednesday, according to Breitbart News.
“I’ll call it the Biden-Burisma investigation and that I think from the outset had the earmarks of a political exercise. I’m fearful that comments made in the media recently have only confirmed that perspective.”
He continued, “Obviously, it is the province of campaigns and political parties’ opposition research, the media, to carry out political endeavors — to learn about or dust-up one’s opponent. But it’s not the legitimate role of government for Congress, or for taxpayer expense, to be used in an effort to damage political opponents.”
He went on to further explain his position saying, “I do believe it is very important that the committees of Congress and ours in particular not fall into an increasing pattern that we are seeing which is using taxpayer dollars and the power of Congress to do political work. That is the role of campaigns.”
Romney has made no secret of his disdain for the president, thought partially to be because of his own failure to secure the role of Commander-in-Chief despite his decades of experience in politics. He has repeatedly shown himself willing to side with Democrats at times when other Republicans (both in politics and voters) stood firmly against their cause.
One such demonstration of that is Homeland Security Committee chairman Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) who himself defended the investigation into the former vice president’s son’s dealings with Ukraine and what the motivation of the country might have been.
According to Johnson, a deep look into Biden’s business with an outside nation is not contradictory to their job description. He also stated that if when they looked into his business it showed “nothing” he would be completely “fine” with that outcome, but he believes that Americans “deserve the truth” either way.
“[O]ur investigation into the things that happened in Ukraine date way back to a political article written right after the 2016 election that shows a potential interference by certain members of Ukraine — possibly members of the DNC — and it just blossomed into uncovering through news reports the fact that Hunter Biden got hired by a fairly corrupt oil company,” Johnson stated according to Breitbart.
The committee chairman outlined what his panel would be investigating, saying, “Blue Star Strategies was hired by that corrupt oil company and apparently used their connections — they’re former Clinton-ites — to bully the State Department, the Department of Justice to potentially affect our attitude, our policy toward Burisma.”
“So, we’re just asking the questions. If there’s nothing there, fine, we’ll get the information and we’ll move on. If there’s something there, I think the American people deserve the truth,” he added.
Johnson, along with any other conservatives, has shown concern with the idea that Biden would use his office for political gain, the way it’s suspected that he used the vice presidency for the same outcome. If a Biden-Harris presidency is what’s in America’s future, deals with international entities could easily morph into a struggle to retain national independence, something conservatives in the United States did once and wouldn’t care to do again.
