Back in 2017, upstate New York happened to experience some pretty serious flooding. Greece, a suburb of Rochester, was one of the towns that was most affected. Sherry Vill and her family happen to reside there. You can imagine her surprise when Andrew Cuomo arrived on the scene, looking to survey the damages. It’s not every day that the governor of your state arrives at the door.
Vill is now claiming that this visit took a turn for the worst, as the governor is alleged to have sexually assaulted her. Cuomo is firing back, claiming that his actions were not sexual in nature. Vill does not agree with this assessment and the governor should be very worried. To make matters even worse for the beleaguered governor, she’s got pictures that prove her version of events.
NBC News has more about this developing story. “A married New York woman said Monday that Gov. Andrew Cuomo grabbed her by her face, gave her unwanted kisses and appeared to come on to her in front of her son while touring flood damage on her property in 2017.
Sherry Vill said she was introduced to Cuomo, in her Greece, New York, home where he leaned over and kissed her cheeks in a “highly sexual manner.” “He said, ‘That’s what Italians do — kiss both cheeks,’” Vill told reporters in an online news conference with her lawyer, Gloria Allred,” NBC reports.
Vill’s son was present and he took a photo of the kiss in question. Video was taken as well but Vill’s son claims that he no longer has it. The allegations keep piling up but the shock value has worn off a long time ago. Cuomo keeps breaking out the same defense over and over. He’s clearly oblivious to how awful his behavior is at this point. The following is a statement from his attorney.
“During times of crisis, the governor has frequently sought to comfort New Yorkers with hugs and kisses. As I have said before, the governor has greeted both men and women with hugs, a kiss on the cheek, forehead or hand for the past forty years,” said Rita Glavin. This excuse is not going to pass muster unless someone can fish out a picture of him kissing a man in this way.
In a bizarre sense, we guess that the governor is not exactly lying. He has been offering up his unwanted comfort for some time now. Maybe there’s a universe where he truly isn’t that bad of a guy, just a horribly misguided one. On the other hand, where there is smoke, fire tends to ensue. It’s easy to see the Democrats wanting to get in front of this one before it is too late.
Gloria Allred serving as Vill’s legal representative may raise some eyebrows but we are trying our best to suspend disbelief. Vill’s story continues into the present day. She says that she received an autographed photo of herself and the governor in the mail. From there, he placed a phone call to her, asking if she would be willing to attend a public event alongside Cuomo.
The invitation did not include any mention of her husband or her family, which was enough to make her question its legitimacy. Will Cuomo finally cave in and resign? We highly doubt it at this point. Of course, there are those who will say that these incidents are rather marginal when it comes to sexual assault. Cuomo is claiming to be a victim of shifting social mores and that excuse could work.
We now know that his behavior was not okay and that invasion of other people’s personal space is not acceptable. Cuomo should also be worried about the amount of support that the Democrats seem to have, as far as removing him from office is concerned. One thing is for sure, though. He is not about to leave his post without a fight. He’ll have to be dragged away by force.
