Peanuts for You and Tens of Millions for Illegals! That’s Biden’s America for You
Washington Post’s immigration reports have been providing more background on the current border crisis. The actual costs associated with this crisis have not been discussed by the mainstream media on any kind of regular basis. How else is the general public supposed to learn more?
It’s hard to deny the lack of preparation that went into Biden’s decision-making process regarding the border. He did not provide border officials with the tools that they needed to deal with the inevitable surge of unaccompanied migrant children arrived. Now, America is forced to take action and improvise on the spot.
Convention centers are being made over into youth hostels and other stopgap measures are being taken. While these measures are alright for the moment, they are costing the American taxpayer far more money than expected. The Washington Post has more on this developing story:
“With a record number of unaccompanied minors arriving at the border in the past several weeks, HHS quickly filled the 7,700 available beds in its network of permanent shelters, where the cost of caring for a child is about $290 daily and capacity has been reduced by covid protocols.
The administration has raced to set up at least 10 large emergency facilities, creating 16,000 temporary beds for migrant children in convention centers, converted oil worker camps and on military bases. About 8,500 children are living at these pop-up sites, and 4,000 more are waiting to be transferred from cramped border facilities.
The cost of these emergency sites is more than 2½ times higher than the more-permanent shelters “due to the need to develop facilities quickly and hire significant staff over a short period of time,” said Kenneth Wolfe, a spokesman for HHS’s Administration for Children and Families. He said the average daily cost per child is “approximately $775 per day based on past experience,” the report reads.
$775 per day is an awful lot of money. Can you imagine how well we could live with that kind of money? You could rent yourself the finest hotel room in all of the land and still have some money left over to get into some mischief. If the migrants were covering these costs, that would be fine.
Author Nick Miroff started doing the math on this and the numbers are absolutely staggering. Let’s say that a child spends 31 days in HHS custody. This is usually the customary amount of time that children spend here before they are released into the custody of a family member. The bill that comes due is hard to wrap our minds around.
$24,000 is spent on each child every month. When you start to do more math on what this adds up to for all of the children who are present in these facilities, it gets out of hand really quickly. Over 8,000 kids are in the system right now and there are over 4,000 who are waiting to get inside. $24,000 per month for over 10,000 kids leads to a hefty bill that we cannot afford to pay.
These costs do not even include the costs that are associated with CBP’s short-term care facilities. As if this were not bad enough, the situation is not slated to get any better during the months to come. Things are only going to get worse and worse and worse. The number of migrants who are going to arrive at the border will only get larger and larger as the summer months go on.
That’s why Biden’s decision was such a grave miscalculation. The leaked projections should be following these trends but they are providing our decision-makers with faulty numbers. There is a decent chance that the administration made this decision knowing that this was a way to make the real numbers look good.
The worst part of all is that these costs are all based on projections. The millions that are going to be spent on illegal migrants are a drop in the bucket. There’s no way that the costs haven’t risen over the past few years. All of the numbers that were provided above are based on past experiences.
The duration of this process could wind up costing us mega millions. The agency has received $47.5 billion for the Democrat CARES act, so there should be no need for any further funding this year. We hope that Congress is willing to put their foot down about this one if there is any more financial strife. Biden’s made this mess and now he needs to clean it up!
